Reasons Why Tooth Extractions Are Necessary
There are several reasons why the removal of one or more teeth might become necessary:
- A tooth is so badly damaged that it cannot be properly restored with a filling or crown.
- A tooth is infected, and removing it will protect nearby tissues from harm.
- A wisdom tooth is impacted (stuck beneath the gumline) and threatening your oral health.
- Extractions are necessary to make room in your mouth for dentures or orthodontia.
- A child’s baby tooth has not fallen out in a timely manner, and removing it will help the adult teeth develop normally.
The Process of Removing a Tooth
One of the first things we will do during your extraction appointment is strive to make you comfortable. We will numb your mouth and possibly administer sedation.
Once you are settled in, we will get started on the extraction. In non-surgical procedures, we lift the tooth with an instrument called an elevator. Then, we grip it with forceps and wiggle it in order to break the connective tissues holding it in place. Once it is out, we clean the socket and place gauze to control bleeding.
In surgical extractions, we might have to make incisions in the gums or cut a tooth into pieces in order to successfully remove it.
Tooth Extraction Aftercare
Here are some guidelines that can help you recover smoothly after your extraction procedure:
- Keep the gauze pad in place for at least 30 – 45 minutes to help control bleeding.
- Bite down gently but firmly on gauze to promote clot formation in the socket.
- Avoid rinsing, spitting, or using a straw for a few days to prevent the blood clot from getting dislodged.
- Apply an ice pack to your cheek in 15-minute intervals to reduce swelling.
- Eat only soft foods and avoid hot or spicy items for the first few days.
- Take prescribed medications as directed by our team.
- Maintain good oral hygiene, but be very careful around the extraction site.
It is also important that you visit us for recommended follow-up care. You will likely need to replace your tooth as soon as possible to avoid complications like a bad bite, shifting of your remaining teeth, and additional tooth loss.
