What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that we place over the entire portion of a tooth that is visible above the gumline. Its job is to protect the underlying dentition while also renewing its form, function, and appearance.

Crowns can be used for a variety of purposes, including the following:

  • Protect a tooth that has suffered extensive decay
  • Restore a tooth that has been treated by root canal therapy
  • Correct the shape of a worn-down or damaged tooth
  • Replace missing teeth (when used as part of a bridge or along with dental implants)

Crowns can be made of various materials. In our practice, we use lifelike options such as porcelain, ceramic, and zirconia.

The Process of Getting a Dental Crown

The process of getting a dental crown requires at least two visits to our office. During the first appointment, we will prepare the tooth by reshaping it so it will fit well beneath its restoration. Then, we will use our digital scanner to take detailed impressions of your mouth. Before you leave our office, we will give you a temporary crown to protect your tooth while a dental laboratory fabricates your permanent one.

After the lab sends your crown to us, you will return for your second appointment. We will verify that the restoration lives up to our rigorous quality standards before we permanently attach it to your tooth.

The Benefits of Getting a Dental Crown

A dental crown can offer some outstanding benefits:

  • Restores tooth function: A crown can allow you to chew and speak more easily, since it strengthens and restores the shape of your damaged tooth.
  • Protects vulnerable teeth: By protecting a damaged tooth, a crown may prevent the need for an extraction.
  • Improves appearance: Dental crowns are designed to seamlessly blend in with the surrounding dentition. No one may even know that you have had some dental work done!
  • Long-lasting solution: With proper care, a dental crown may last for 10 – 15 years or longer. Our team will coach you on what you can do to extend the lifespan of your restoration.
