What Are Implant Dentures?

Simply put, implant dentures combine two popular dental restorations. Biocompatible implant posts are anchored to your jawbone, then connected to a completely personalized denture. This allows your jawbone to act as the main support for your replacement teeth, rather than your gums.

Implant dentures enable patients to enjoy many unique benefits that they otherwise wouldn’t by receiving either restoration alone. But before getting into that, you should know that there are two main types of implant dentures: fixed (also known as “permanent”) and removable.

Fixed/Permanent Implant Dentures

As the name suggests, fixed (or permanent) implant dentures are not designed to be taken out of your mouth. Some patients prefer this option because it streamlines the oral hygiene process, allowing them to brush and floss the same way they would for natural teeth.

An important factor to consider, though, is that fixed implant dentures usually require more implant posts. Depending on your jawbone mass and budget, this could determine whether they’re the right choice for you.

Removable Implant Dentures

In contrast, removable implant dentures can be taken out of your mouth. You’ll have to take extra care to remove and clean your restoration every day, but a removable prosthetic is generally more accessible because it requires fewer implant posts.

The Implant Denture Process

The best way to know which type of implant denture is best for you is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Young. This will give him the opportunity to understand your smile goals and treatment needs and also examine your mouth. Based on your discussion, he’ll help guide your decision with his professional insight.

If implant dentures are a good fit for you, we’ll make arrangements to surgically place the implant posts to your jawbone, give the biocompatible materials time to fuse with the bone (which can take between three to six months), then finally provide you with your customized denture.

Am I a Candidate for Implant Dentures?

In order to make sure your treatment is a success, it’s important to have good oral health and sufficient jawbone mass for supporting the restoration. However, even if you don’t have these qualities going into your consultation, we may be able to help with preliminary treatments. Don’t consider yourself unqualified until you’ve had a chat with Dr. Young!
