Do I Need Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal treatment is often necessary when an infection develops in the pulp of a tooth, its innermost layer that is made up of nerves, blood vessels and connective tissues.

Here are some signs that you might need a root canal:

  • You have a severe, throbbing toothache.
  • A tooth is highly sensitive to temperature changes, and the discomfort lingers even after the source of the temperature change is removed.
  • There is visible damage to a tooth.
  • A tooth is significantly darker than the ones around it.
  • There is a pimple-like bump on the gums near a tooth.

The Root Canal Process

To start a root canal, we will numb your mouth so you feel little to no discomfort during the procedure. In some cases, we also administer sedation.

To perform the root canal itself, we will use special instruments to access the interior of your tooth and carefully clean out all the infected tissue. We will also remove the tooth’s nerve so it can no longer send pain signals to your brain. To finish, we fill in the tooth with an inert material called Gutta-Percha. In most cases, a crown is necessary to protect a tooth that has undergone root canal therapy.

The Benefits of Getting a Root Canal

Root canal treatment offers some pretty outstanding benefits:

  • Root canal therapy allows you to preserve your natural tooth, which is better for your oral health and can save you money compared to extraction and replacement options.
  • By saving your tooth, you help maintain proper bite alignment and jaw health.
  • With proper care, there is a strong chance that your treated tooth will continue to function well for decades to come.
  • Taking care of a tooth that has been treated with a root canal is easy. Good oral hygiene and regular dental checkups are important!
  • Even though root canals have a reputation for being painful, that is not true! It is a surprisingly comfortable procedure.
  • A root canal can provide long-term toothache relief.
